We are not accepting applications for Summer 2016

The 2015 REU program is scheduled to run from June 1st until July 31st. Should these dates conflict with your institution's academic schedule, please let us know on your application form and we may be able to arrange alternative dates in some cases.

Students will receive a stipend for the summer.

Housing and Food Services

REU students will be housed in the Nittany Apartments. These apartments feature communal kitchens, equipped with a refrigerator and stove. Students will also have access to campus dining options and downtown State College restaurants.

Location and Travel

Penn State's University Park campus is located in central Pennsylvania near State College, conveniently located 3 hours from Pittsburgh, 4 hours from Philadelphia and Washington D.C./Baltimore, and 5 hours from New York City. State College features Megabus and Greyhound bus service as well as a regional airport with flights available through Detroit, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, or Washington Dulles.

For out of state students, there is a limited travel reimbursement fund available to cover some of your travel expenses to and from Penn State.

Students interested in the REU in Soft Materials at Penn State must be enrolled in a program leading to a Bachelor's degree during the summer. Exceptions can be made for students who are in the process of transferring from one college to another. High school graduates who have not yet entered a Bachelor's program and seniors graduating before the summer are not eligible.

The National Science Foundation requires that REU participants be either United States citizens or permanent residents. Limited resources from different funding agencies may be available for outstanding international students.

Women, Minorities and Disabled

An important goal of the REU program is to provide an opportunity to perform high-quality research to students who would not normally have the chance to do so. This especially includes women, members of minority groups, and the disabled—all groups who are significantly underrepresented in the science and engineering communities and whose talents will be an important contribution to the nation's scientific resources for the future.

If you wish to participate in the REU program and anticipate needing any type of accommodation, please contact us at or (814)-865-5765 in advance.
